CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

“Move and we shoot!”

Roderick’s voice, commanding and confident as it had been before, rang out in the darkness, and Garron slowed in the trees near the entrance, holding a hand up to signal Ada to do the same. The rest of the group were hanging back, not as quick as Garron and Ada, nor as well armed.

“Oh? I seem to remember running through this little Noble den just a few weeks ago. Didn’t have archers then,” A strangely accented voice replied, a sneer in his voice. Garron tensed. In his Essence sight, he could see a spiral of infernal Essence, in the F-ranks but with the purity of a cultivator—and behind that, at least two more. The walls were blocking his Essence vision, even from this side, so he couldn’t be sure.

“Times change,” Roderick replied without missing a beat. The actor’s voice had the hard edge of a man used to battle. Impressive. “Last chance to drop the knife.”

A moment of silence. Garron listened, tense, from the shadows surrounding the path. How many were there? Would they listen? Quietly, he raised the crossbow in his hand, fitting the bolt and pointing it at the infernal Center.

“Make me, swi—”

Garron released the bolt with a click. It shot through the trees, engaging against the infernal cultivator’s body. A startled shout rang out in the trees, then a string of curses from another pair of mouths. The three F-ranked centers huddled closer together in the gate entrance, but no others appeared. Were there only three?

“Abyss-curse it, I’ll kill you for that!” A pained snarl told Garron he hadn’t dropped the man.

“Ada. Go. Wait for my signal,” Garron whispered, making a circular motion to his companion. She nodded, then crept off. He slotted another bolt, sending a burst of Essence through his bow to reset it. He blessed the lack of a glow associated with using the crossbow; it was inscribed, so the energy remained contained within the effect.

“Do you want another one in your neck?” Roderick growled, still cool and in command. He was very good, and had apparently taken Garron’s intervention in stride. Now, if only he could hold the cultivators at bay for a few more moments, they had a chance.

“Bastard,” a new voice snapped, but none of the centers advanced. Garron glanced behind, seeing that Doc and the rest of the actors were still hanging back, apparently hearing the conversation, and perhaps even Garron’s crossbow bolt. Garron pulled his attention back to the group at the gates in time to catch Roderick speaking with a grim smile in his voice.

“Good. Now then, back away, real slow, and no one has to get hurt,” the ‘guard’ instructed.

“We’ll be back, you know.” The sound of spitting, and the strangely accented voice continued. “Lord Ultyr has claimed this place, and nothing will stand in his way. His Fingers will come here and leave this place a ruin.”

Garron frowned. Ultyr. Fingers. These elves worked for the same ‘Lord’ who commanded the party that attacked the villagers.
